Track restoration

Track & Roadway Restoration

This process is ideal for existing access tracks that are full of pot holes, rutted and generally in poor condition or that that have been repaired using a mixture of materials. Normally the process does not require any additional materials. It breaks up the existing stone structure, which is then graded and compacted to recycle and rejuvenate your existing tracks.

Site inspection & Survey

Following your enquiry, WBC will visit you to inspect your existing roadways, paths or drive and go through what finish you are wishing to achieve and what loading they will be required to withstand. The existing roadway is surveyed to ensure the thickness of hardcore is sufficient for recycling. This is critical to ensure the roadway is long lasting and does not sink and cause ruts and pot holes. Low points can be brought up to the required levels by importing fresh hardcore material.

Drainage requirements and the introduction of falls to the stone roadway is discussed to ensure rainwater is shed from the road surface. We will also discuss health and safety, protection of the public, site access, signage and material delivery requirements.

Ripping blades

The first process on site utilises the PTH Ripper, which breaks up the existing track surface.

The ripper is designed so that stones, bricks, concrete are dislodged and twisted out of the ground. The ripper loosens up the track structure to ensure the stone crusher can operate to maximum efficiency.

The blades are spring-loaded to prevent sudden shock loads on the tractor during unexpectedly high resistance from large boulders or rocks.

Hardcore crushing unit

The MERIRoad 6000 Series crusher unit is similar to a fast acting rotavator. Hardened steel bullet shaped tips break up the existing stone hardcore track. Roadways that are made up of concrete blocks, bricks, stone and other recycled aggregates are all broken up to a more uniform size, making an ideal material for compaction and longevity.

The depth that the crusher unit operates is variable, dependant on the existing materials and condition of the track, but generally the depth is set at 200mm.

Previous issues with the existing track, such as pot holes, high spots and ruts are removed.

Cement Stabilisation Option

Cement Stabilisation is ideal for creating a hard surface to your existing hardcore track, maybe where forklifts are loading in a yard or where a track joins a highway.

Cement is loaded into the front hopper unit and accurately dosed onto the existing stone roadway. This is then wet and incorporated into the hardcore which fills the voids between the aggregate and binds the hardcore structure to provide a hard, durable surface suitable. The stone structure is then rolled flat and consolidated.

The amount of cement utilised is calculated dependent upon the usage of the track and the loading requirements.

Bobcat Grader

Once the hardcore has been broken up and crushed the hardcore material is loose and can be profiled.

The grader blade is angled to re-position the hardcore to form a camber. Forming a camber to the track, helps prevent rainwater pooling and sheds water to the side of the track, which is a frequent cause of potholes.

The wheels on the front of the grader keep the grader moving smoothly over the track and help follow the natural contours of the terrain.

Multi-plate compactor

A hydraulically driven, multi-plate compactor consolidates the hardcore. The plates move independently from one another, following the contours produced by the grading operation.

The consolidation process is undertaken with several passes of the track to ensure the hardcore material is fully compacted and make it suitable for heavy plant and vehicle traffic.
